The physics of the sand-free mat are straightforward but the difference in beach experience is substantial. Sand that lands on the mat after someone walks past or a small wave washes over is easily brushed to the side and falls through the mesh. The mat itself dries within minutes of water contact because the open mesh structure allows air to circulate freely through both layers.
